RT @schestowitz My tweets were copies of most dents in !identica which is now betraying users by flushing data http://ur1.ca/e2mwu
- Krayon likes this.
-
@laurelrusswurm that sounds like a lot of FUD...
-
@jankusanagi I think he pointed out the problems pretty well, where does he go wrong in your opinion?
-
Payback is a bitch. Those who stick around have to alpha test pumpio.
-
Those who stick around will hopefully help to improve Pump.io. And what's wrong with that ? That's the least we can do. Instead of bleating.
-
'payback' - Christ - you really are bitter about this aren't you ?
-
Are you suggesting it will be beta quality on June first? It wasn't a couple of days ago when I checked.
-
@zoowar I'm saying that the testing started a looong time ago, not assesting its quality (which I find pretty good, though incomplete)
-
@zoowar the changes coming to status.net and identi.ca were anounced in 2012...
-
If you can't be arsed following @evan on Pump to discover some of the background and rationale, I can't be arsed explaining it to you.
-
Meanwhile...someone I stopped following is still watering their peppers.
-
@zoowar you clearly don't understand the idea behind "proof-of-concept"... too bad.
-
I think you're the one mistaken about "proof-of-concept". You don't force 50k active users to prove a concept.
-
Read my lips. The move was to keep an identi.ca service alive. The running costs were prohibitive. Too late now to request a 'Donate' button
-
@zoowar openfarmgame is the proof of concept *sigh*
-
My bad, I didn't read the context of this reply and wrongly assumed you were referring to pumpio.
-
Unless you know the cost breakdown, you can't support this argument. Unlikely this is the motivation to switch to pumpio in the first place.
-
@zoowar I know Evan said so himself. I'm not the one offering the service, and I don't need to second-guess him.
-
Yes, but where are the savings coming from? Eliminating Salmon? Nodejs? Use of database?
-
You'll have to ask @evan how that works out.
-
@jankusanagi I think Roy did an excellent job of pointing out the dangers involved of trusting our online data to third parties.
-
@jankusanagi Identi.ca is a service, and "we owe identi.ca, not the other way around" is a subjective judgement & clearly Roy does not agree
-
@jankusanagi One reason I liked Identi.ca was data stability; Identica did say user data would be retrievable; that it is not is disturbing
-
@laurelrusswurm I agree with that, but not with the attack on identi.ca and the FUD about it.
-
@laurelrusswurm who said it's not retrievable?
-
@jankusanagi What "FUD" specifically ?
-
@jankusanagi The only way to get personal back-ups in entirety is for @evan to do it manually and forward (as he did this for @marjoleink)
-
@jankusanagi several people, including me. the 'official' backup just won't work if you have more than 5.5-6K dents
-
@laurelrusswurm anyone can create tools to access that data. The API is there.
-
@jankusanagi yes, that's the ntheory. In practice you hit a limit
-
@jankusanagi Are you saying that the data will continue to stay accessible online?
-
@jankusanagi also, you won't hit that limit since you have far fewer dents
-
@laurelrusswurm I didn't say that. But Evan also said it will be on archive.org. Instead of ranting, people should _help_
-
@jankusanagi even @evan doingf it manually was hitting errors and bumps - how complete do you expect the archive.org backups to be for...
-
@jankusanagi ...those of us with > 6K dents? Is he going to do all those backups manually?
-
@jankusanagi Roy's article was written to help users, to warn people of dangers inherent in trusting our data to a third party.
-
@jankusanagi I do very much appreciate what @evan has done/is doing but I also understand how many feel betrayed/marooned
-
@jankusanagi Although many !identica users are tech folks, many non-tech folks like myself joined the service for !privacy and/or #freedom
-
@laurelrusswurm I'm very glad I started so early trying to get my data out - last-minute will be a problem for quite a few people, I expect
-
@laurelrusswurm And God knows, he should know as he has now done it 3 times. What's that definition of madness again?
-
@laurelrusswurm That really is a rehashed tired story from 2006. It is hardly earth shattering news.
-
ore stable, sure - but not different. either you want threaded conversations or you don't but they won't be in pump.io
-
A donate buttonn has been requested frequently and was always rejected
-
@andyc It may not be earth shattering news to you, but most of the world is made up of people who have no idea until it happens to them
-
@andyc Just as most of the world is still dazzled by proprietary software ~ computers are magic. Which is why the work Roy does is important
-
@laurelrusswurm It's a great backup though not an export. To most people, that will be of limited use as you can't import it anywhere.
-
@andyc of course you can import it - tough whether you can do so with existing tools and get a really working data set remains to be seen
-
@andyc in my analysis I'll need heavy massaging of the data to get a working copy back
-
I just need the heavy massaging, not the data ;)
-
@andyc Some people want to be able to import backups into their own status net instances.
-
@marjoleink pump.io allows for threaded conversations. The Web UI is just one way to look at it, not the only one.
-
@jankusanagi did you look at the bug tracker? @even specifically said there would only be comments to a top post
-
@marjoleink I've commented on a comment myself. The webUI might not support those, but they're possible.
-
@jankusanagi interesting - that's contrary to what @evan said. He even talks about top post as 'major' and comments as 'minor'...
-
@marjoleink obviously he can change the design, I'm just saying that it's possible, even if not "really supported".
-
@jankusanagi it's still enough by itself to chase me away from identi.ca
-
@marjoleink only you know your priorities
-
@jankusanagi actually, many others know them too, I've hardly been reticent about what matters to me ;)
-
@marjoleink ok, let me rephrase that: you know your own priorities better than anyone.
-
@jankusanagi :)
-
I totally understand and appreciate that. I find it odd that 'Import' is missing or at least waiting for someone to write it.
-
Yes - most people are incapable or uninterested in writing the import utility though. They just want export/import. Understandably so.
-
@andyc I'm guessing more are interested than are capable ;)
-
@andyc of course the lack of documentation doesn't make things any easier
