In this case the hard drive has been spewing errors in the logs for month's now, so I'm pretty sure that's the underlying problem. I haven't installed anything recently so shouldn't be a problem with dynamic linking in my case.

Fortunately I was aware of this so I already replaced the media server, and I've got a new drive in the mail. Once I've replaced the drive it'll serve as my "new" desktop computer and my Thinkpad can serve as an actual laptop again :-) I'm getting three new computers with just one purchase :-)
